My 1st July Ritual

The 1st of July is my favourite date of the year.
For the past 5 years (except 2020 because we all know what happened that year!) I have blocked off my calendar for a morning at the spa to scrub away the past 12 months, to take a moment to pause and reflect, followed by an afternoon of goal setting and client visits.
For me, this time away from the office is non-negotiable.
The next two months in the bookkeeping world are full on.
On top of the regular day-to-day work of keeping client books in order, we’re also responsible for:
Finalising 2024–25 payroll and lodging with the ATO so employees can start their tax returns
Reconciling and reporting employee earnings to Return to Work SA (formerly WorkCover)
Working with clients to forecast wages for the next 12 months so Return to Work SA can issue insurance premiums
Preparing and lodging Quarter 4 BAS (due late August)
Reviewing all client files from the past year and completing workpapers for their accountants (which we’re making easier in future by offering our own accounting service with our partnership with Finesse Tax)
Rebuilding our internal spreadsheets and updating workflows to match new financial year deadlines
And just to keep things interesting…
From July 1st, all BAS agents running their own business are now required to implement a formal Quality Management System (QMS). Ours came in at 60 pages—documenting the framework, processes, procedures, and responsibilities that underpin She’s a Keeper.
Oh, and we’ve also transitioned to a more secure client portal to address rising ATO fraud risk.
So yes—a lot.
That’s why July 1st at the day spa isn’t self-indulgence, it’s strategy. A clear head and calm energy are essential tools when you’re navigating the most intense period of the year.
To all the fellow bookkeepers and BAS agents—go gently, and don’t forget to take five for yourself. You’ve earned it.
